Prepare an Interview Story (STAR)

Turns a rough work story into a clear, interview-ready narrative.

When to use it

Interviewers ask "Tell me about a time when..." and you blank. This gets your story straight so you can deliver it confidently.

The prompt

Shape this into an interview story:

Situation: [SITUATION]
My role: [ROLE]
Result: [RESULT]

Use the STAR format:
- Situation (30 seconds): what was the challenge or project?
- Task (20 seconds): what were you responsible for?
- Action (45 seconds): what exactly did you do? (specific, not "I worked hard")
- Result (30 seconds): what changed? (metrics if you have them)

Total: about 1.5-2 minutes. Conversational, no corporate speak.

Example

Input: Situation: onboarding was slow (new customers took a week to get set up). Role: I found the bottleneck (manual step in the setup) and built a workaround. Result: average onboarding dropped from 7 days to 2 days.

What you get: Story that opens with "We were onboarding customers manually...", explains your specific fix (not "improved process"), closes with the impact (5-day improvement).

Tips

  • "I did X" is stronger than "we did X." Own your contribution.
  • Metrics matter: "reduced time by 70%" beats "made it faster."
  • Practice this out loud. It sounds different when you hear it.
